What were your first impressions of Korea?
Paul Zantua, RN, ICU
Everything is so clean and organized. People you cross paths with smile and greet you. Learning that Seoul is a large city, both in size and population, the rush hour traffic on the roads and the subway stations somewhat felt like home in Los Angeles - but without the road rage.

I have been to Korea previously, however it’s been a few years since. A lot has changed and Korea has become very innovative and technologically advanced. It is very clean and the buildings seemed to be getting taller. Overall, it was delightful.

I’m Korean and I visit Korea almost every year. But every time I visit, I feel that Korea is one of a modern, vibrant, and advanced country.
What are the differences between the U.S. and Korean healthcare systems?
Paul Zantua, RN, ICU
Korean healthcare appears to be more “universal.” It is more easily accessible for everyone, despite socioeconomic status. The patient flow at all facilities was organized and orderly. We learned Fertility treatments are very common in Korea, and are very accessible and affordable.

Korea has universal healthcare coverage, unlike the private insurance system we have here in the U.S.

I think it is the affordability of medical care. South Korea is known for its accessibility and lower costs, while the U.S. healthcare system faces challenges with coverage, affordability, and access to services.
What impressed you the most during the tour?
Paul Zantua, RN, ICU
The efficiency all the CHA facilities were able to maintain despite the large volume of daily patient traffic. All of the facilities were beautifully designed as well. They closely resembled art galleries and luxury centers. And the food? Absolutely wonderful..

The food! Everything was phenomenal, from the hotel breakfast to the many delicious restaurants we were treated to.

I loved every part of the tour! The most impressive experience was definitely the cuisine. It was delicious and the atmosphere was great at every restaurant we visited. The poolside dinner party at CBC on the last night was so much fun. It was especially great getting to meet people from CHA facilities worldwide, and an honor to meet Dr. Cha in person.

What was your favorite thing that you saw in the CHA Health System hospitals?
Paul Zantua, RN, ICU
The new and advanced equipment, and the thoughtful layout of each hospital. The facilities were arranged in ways that made sense for patient flow. I also appreciate the strategically placed coffee shops and convenience stores that patients and staff could easily access.

CHA Health Systems was all very new and impressive. The biotech and the ecosystem was futuristic, but the Fertility facility in Gangnam blew me away. Lighted arrows and directions on the floors, and tablets to check-ins and control traffic. Everything was amazing.

As a NICU nurse, it was great to be able to see the NICU unit at Cha Bundang Hospital. I was impressed to see so many nurses working hard for critically-ill infants.
What information are you planning to take back to your colleagues at CHA HPMC?
Paul Zantua, RN, ICU
I cannot emphasize enough how beautifully clean and organized their facilities are maintained, as well as the culture of respect within the centers among patient and staff. It made me realize that we at CHA HPMC can also achieve that level of service.

The CHA Healthcare system is huge in Korea. Observing and learning the structure and system at Bundang Regional Medical Center also gave me ideas to try and implement in our ER at CHA HPMC.

I will share that Cha Fertility Center is a world-class facility for IVF treatment. They offer one of the best IVF treatments with highly-experienced doctors and staff. Also, their success rate is more than 60%!
How did you find the experience at Chaum Life Center?
Paul Zantua, RN, ICU
Chaum Life Center is a great healthcare center for those who have access. It is a cross between holistic care and luxury. The center appears to give its patients population an incredibly elevated standard of care.

Chaum Life Center is very peaceful. The nature like atmosphere and high-end accommodations was an elegant sight. It seemed to be a state-of-the-art facility.

Just being at Chaum made me feel calm and relaxed. I learned that Chaum provides highly personalized and comprehensive healthcare services. Chaum is a suitable place for people who prefer privacy around their healthcare treatments. I also couldn’t help but be amazed by the remarkable anti-aging technology they provide.

What do you think about the Korean Emergency Rooms?

It is amazing how the Emergency Rooms were able to be so clean and organized despite the chaos of emergency care.

It was captivating to see how the CHA Bundang ER resembled our own at CHA HPMC. The system seemed more structured and the equipment was more contemporary.

I hope that Korea’s healthcare system returns to normal soon so that people who are sick or in need of help can visit the emergency room at any time.
CHA Fertility Center is renowned for its high success rates, representing CHA. What were your impressions of the CHA Fertility Center?
Paul Zantua, RN, ICU
I’m amazed at how popular fertility and IVF are in Korea. CHA has many fertility centers, which allows for more accessibility to Koreans, as well as foreigners who are looking to receive services.

CHA Fertility Center is very technologically advanced and a pioneer in research with its highly experienced researchers. It’s top-tier, specialized services are so complex!

The CHA Fertility Center is considered one of the best fertility clinics in Korea. I was impressed that the center has a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including OBGYN, urologist, endocrinologist, and internal medicine. They handle a various range of fertility issues. It was amazing to see a large biobank tank for secure long-term storage of embryos, oocytes and sperm.
Can you share your thoughts on the symposium about patient-friendly IVF solutions?
Paul Zantua, RN, ICU
I was in awe being in a room with highly-educated speakers who had amazing findings in their research. Each speaker’s passion for their individual topics was evident in their presentations. The different kinds of research that has been done in IVF and the ongoing studies gives me hope for the future in the world of adult critical care.

It was interesting to learn about the patient-centered research, and how they are incorporating advanced technologies to address challenges in fertility care.

At the symposium, it was great to see truly competent doctors and specialists sharing their knowledge on the patient-friendly IVF solutions. I truly enjoyed every moment in Korea.

How did you enjoy the food and cultural experiences in Korea? Did you like the restaurants and other events organized for you?

Food and culture are the top things that enthuse me as a traveler. Being that those were a big part of this experience made the trip even more enjoyable. The restaurants served delicious food and learning about Korean culture was an enlightening experience.

Korea’s culture is fascinating to me. This tour made me realize how much I love Korea, especially after visiting Gyeongbokgun, the former royal palace. The restaurants were exquisite! The hanshikjib with the beef tartare was to die for.

I was delighted to experience a wide variety of fresh Korean and Western fusion dishes. Every restaurant I visited was clean and welcoming.
